Abstract
Background: The final objective of diabetic education is the induction of behavioral change that is greatly dependent on the attitude of patients to their disease.

Method: We assessed the effect of diabetic education and influence of attitude on the effect in 25 adolescents(mean age: 16.5 years, range: 10-23 years) with IDDM who participated in summer camp program for a week. The attitudes of patients according to the degree of their perception of responsibility for their disease were evaluated by personal responsibility assessment system(PRAS). Self-perceptions about their personal competence for successfully managing
their diabetes were evaluated by self-efficacy for diabetes scale(SED).

Result: The results are as follows 1. The patient group with high levels(4-5) of personal responsibility showed lower mean blood sugar during camp and lower hemoglobin A1c before and after camp. But there were no statistical ignificance. 2. Mean SED score of total items improved significantly after education (3.6¡¾0.5 vs. 4.2¡¾0.5, P<0.05).
3. The items of SED that showed good response after education were mainly related to self-regulation skills. 4. The items that showed low initial score and poor response after education were related to psychosocial aspects. 5. There were no significant correlation between SED score and hemoglobin A1c or mean blood sugar. 6. There were no significant difference of SED score in relation to age, sex, and onset age and duration of diabetes.

Conclusion: The patients with high levels of personal responsibility for their disease were thought to manage their diseases well. Good response may be expected in self-regulation skills after relatively short period of education, but we should consider poor reponse in the psychosocial aspects.
